The History of Bluefield Elks Lodge No. 269
Bluefield Lodge No. 269 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was chartered on December 13, 1883. The
Lodge was originally located at the corner of Bland and Raleigh Street. The Lodge purchased the Cumberland Road facility
in 1980. The current facility was purchased in January 1998 and remodeled. The business moved from Cumberland
Road to the Whitethorn location formerly known as the Bluefield Country Club on May 20, 1998.
The members of the Lodge are responsible for the business operations of the Lodge. Because all of the members are
volunteers as committee persons and officers, the Lodge does appoint a House Committee to over-see the complete operation.
The House Committee hires staff to ensure the daily operations.
The Lodge Officers are elected or appointed to serve one year with the Lodge year beginning April 1st.
In addition to the operation, the Lodge is involved in many programs for the community. These programs include
Veterans Day, Flag Day, scholarships, summer camps, food baskets for the needy, Special Olympics, Drug Awareness and many
others.
Bluefield Elks Lodge No. 269 is one of more than 2, 200 Elks Lodges nation-wide that belong to the Grand Lodge of the
Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks whose headquarters is located in Chicago. The first Elks Lodge was New York
Lodge No. 1, founded in 1868. There are over 500 members on the Bluefield Elks Lodge roll this year.
